The People in the U.S. Justice System

Fill in the blanks with the correct forms of the verb.

1. The judge (have) _has_ ultimate authority in the courtroom and (make sure) _make sure_ that justice is done. In the U.S. judges (elect)_are elected_ or (appoint)_appointed_ by elected officials.

2. The prosecuting attorney (present) _presented_ the state's case against a suspect. The people of the state or local county or city (represent) _are represented_ by the prosecuting attorney, who is sometimes called a district attorney.

3. The person who (defend) _defends_ the criminal (call) _are called_ the defense attorney. In American law, when a poor person cannot afford an attorney, a lawyer (appoint) _is appointed_ by the court.
